The College of Automation has a profound history. It was set up on the basis of four majors of the Department of Naval Engineering, namely hydrographic survey, marine electrical automation, automatic weapon and missile launcher in the period of PLA Military Engineering Institute ( namely “Harbin Military Engineering Institute”). In 1998, the College of Automation is composed of three parts, which are the Automation Department, the major of missile control of Aerospace Engineering Department and the research laboratory of system engineering in the period of Harbin Shipping Engineering Institute.

In the period of Harbin Military Engineering Institute, the major of shipping electricity was original among the universities across China. The major of shipping electricity began its enrollment in 1955, and the electrical equipment specialty set up the major of launching device of shipping missile in1960; in 1970, the weapon and shipping control major related to automatic control-ship weapon automatic control was established on the basis of launcher major and the scientific research group of fin stabilizer; in October 1975, the six departments decided to combine 401 major and 403 major, and changed the name of shipping electric major to “electrification automation of ships and shipyards”; in February 1986, the undergraduate major of industrial electrical automation was added according to the [1986]59 document of CSSC; in July 1991, 32 undergraduate majors were guaranteed by the State Education Commission, including the major of industrial electrical automation and automatic control.

The college of automation began to enroll postgraduates in 1965; in 1981, the major of gyroscope navigation equipment of Harbin Shipping Engineering Institute was among the first group of majors authorized the right of master degree by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; in 1990, the subject control theory and engineering” of the institute was authorized the national secondary doctorate conferring station; in 1993, the subject navigation, guidance and control” of the institute was granted the national secondary doctorate conferring station; in 1998, the subject control science and engineering” of the institute was granted the national first-level doctorate conferring station as well as post-doctoral research station; in 2001, navigation, guidance and control” was authorized national major; in 2011, control science and engineering” got excellent results in the evaluation of major subjects of Heilongjiang Province; in 2012, control science and engineering” ranked the 17th (the percentile of 20.5%) at the third round of evaluation of the Ministry of Education.
